How it Works: Elements of a Ball Bearing

Inside a Ball Bearing

Ever wonder what the inside of a ball bearing looks like? We pulled one apart to show the interior components. The balls are held within cages and rotate along the inner ring and raceway, which is on the underside of the outer ring.

Ball bearings are packed with power. They allow two surfaces to slide against each other to produce movement. Friction is reduced by providing smooth inner and outer surfaces for the balls to roll against. These balls are then able to move a load, with a smooth interior spin.

Ball bearings are found in everything from fans and refrigerators to cars and airplanes.
